An Unforgettable musical journey

UNFORGETTABLE: The Nat King Cole Story at The Fringe, Joburg Theatre, on March 23rd, is set to redefine musical theatre in South Africa.

Speaking from Phoenix, Arizona, where it has just completed a highly successful American run, Jerry Lonn explained the structure of the show.

"Unforgettable moves musical theatre from the realm of tribute show to that of musical biography. It's a meticulously researched chronicle of Mr. Cole's life which details his rise from club piano player to world superstar while coping with seemingly insurmountable obstacles along the way. It examines his relationships with key people in his life such as Reverend Coles, his father, and Natalie, his daughter, and this story line is packaged along with all those memorable hit songs which have become part of the soundtrack of our lives.
Monroe Kent, star of the show, plays a number of roles and delivers an astonishing performance, particularly when the script calls for two of his characters to have a dialogue with each other. His stage presence, combined with a unique vocal ability, leaves an indelible impression on all who see the show.

As we pause to remember the passing, exactly 45 years ago, of this African-American icon, we think it's significant the show will now be playing to South African audiences for the first time. Mr. Cole would have approved."

Nat King Cole’s music is timeless and he won the hearts of millions with the ease of his down-to-earth personality and the most recognisable American voice since Sinatra. The whole story is here ... his piano-playing days in low down dives and honky-tonks, his breakthrough contract with Capital Records, his fight against racism at the studio and in his own Hollywood neighbourhood.

The songs are here too ... incredible hits like Mona Lisa, Route 66, Too Young, Paper Moon and the classic Unforgettable.

UNFORGETTABLE: THE NAT KING COLE STORY opens at The Fringe, Joburg Theatre on March 23rd and runs until April 11th. The show is presented in Joburg by Lonn Entertainment and Relavations Group.
