FUSION FLAMENCA
Flamenco flair returns to Joburg Theatre
The click of a castanet, the whirl of a skirt, the impassioned lament of a Spanish guitar... this is Fusión Flamenca at the Joburg Theatre from 11 to 14 March 2010.
Joburg audiences who were captivated by El Rincon Flamenco’s sensual flamenco-inspired production Caminando two years ago will be thrilled to hear that the same team is returning with a new show that’s set to be even more dazzling than its predecessor.
This time, Mireille Lenferna and Joanne Bobrow have crafted a passionate ode to this magnificent dance form, blending elements of other dance styles – including African gumboot dancing and contemporary dance – to create an intriguing spectacle of movement.
As usual, the production blends dramatic visual imagery with a striking musical tradition, made all the more compelling by the introduction of African percussion. The combination of this, and other musical and dance genres, makes for an unforgettable showcase of the fire that is flamenco, drawing on the dance form’s origins and influences in a vibrant show that will keep audiences spellbound.
Bobrow and Lenferna’s Caminando enjoyed great acclaim and has toured throughout South Africa and India.
Once again, in Fusión Flamenca the company teams with international flamenco star Rosana Maya, who will be making a guest appearance. Joining the dancers on stage are Rudo van Staden and André Liebenberg, who make up the ace local acoustic guitar duo Mischief.
This potent blend of cross-pollinated dance styles, mesmerising music and arresting visuals is set to scorch up the stage – be sure not to miss it.
Catch Fusión Flamenca at the Joburg Theatre’s Fringe Theatre for five shows from 11 to 14 March. Performances are from Thursday to Saturday at 8pm, with 3pm matinees on Saturday and Sunday. Book at Computicket.
