The South African Ballet Theatre brings you the world’s best known and most loved ballet `Swan Lake`, presented in the tradition of this grand Russian classic.
Dating back to 1876, the tragic love story of the swan maiden Odette and Prince Siegfried has proved itself to be the one of the most endearing ballets in the repertoire with audiences around the world. The South African Ballet Theatre’s production will take its cue from the traditional Petipa version of the ballet whilst incorporating fresh elements tailored to suit the Company. The production will have a shorter running time and there will be one interval. Wednesday and Thursday evening performances will start at 19h30 instead of 20h00, to enable patrons to have an enjoyable night at the theatre without arriving home too late during the week. SABT first performed Swan Lake in 2001 as the inaugural production presented at the refurbished Joburg Theatre.
‘Swan Lake’ is the story of Prince Siegfried, who, while out hunting swans by a lake, falls in love with Odette, a beautiful princess who has been turned into a swan by the evil magician, Von Rothbart. The spell can only be broken, allowing her to return to human form, if a prince swears true love to her. Prince Siegfried invites Odette to attend his birthday celebrations where he must choose a bride and where he will choose her. However, Von Rothbart learns of their meeting and transforms his daughter, Odile, into the image of Odette as a black swan. Together they attend the Prince’s birthday celebration and trick Prince Siegfried into swearing true love to Odile. When the deception is discovered, the distraught Prince rushes back to the lake to his beloved Odette
